Yes, as a matter of fact, I DO have to complain about it!

For her Fall semester in college, and her last, Samatha will not have much of this:
Why?

Because her mom waited until May 18 to fill out the FAFSA. And who knows what she did, but Samantha was not offered any money, except for student loans. Sure, she can take out a loan for her last semester, and she will. (She has only taken out one small loan so far.) But I know that with her GPA, she would might have gotten something else if the FAFSA had been filled out sooner.

Well, that and if her mom had not been so selfish about wanting Samantha as a dependent. BM (biomom) had worked 2 jobs a big part of last year, so I imagine had a pretty nice income, with a pretty nice tax bite. I totally don't blame her for wanting a little tax relief, but not at the expense of her child's financial aid.

Oh, oh, oh and get this, BM's accountant did not file a tax return for Samantha as she did not make enough money to have to. Ummm...what about the refund of some of the taxes that she paid in, Mr. Accountant?

Oh, well, I just had to get it out and I am not going to worry about it anymore. When Samantha told me all of this last weekend, I told her to go talk to the FinAid office to see if she could keep her work study that she is currently in. The school can offer whatever they want and maybe she will luck out.

I also told her that if she comes up short on tuition money, that her mom will need to pony up the dough.

Wow! I so hope her mother ponies up...
And that she's able to keep her work-study!

Hi, McVal. Worst case scenario, Sam has to take out another loan. That's okay, it is her education.

If she comes up a little short, we might help her out, but she and her bf live a little too "high on the hog" for me to be willing to help out more than a little.

I DO keep them in groceries and HBA.

Don't even get me started on the FAFSA. I so hate that thing!

Thanks for coming by, Debbie! I didn't mind the FAFSA. I DID mind it being screwed up. Oh well.

Good for you for having her mom pony up the dough. I can't believe she was that selfish.

Thanks for coming to see me, Pam. I don't guess I can make Sam's mom do anything. I never could before. LOL!

But she SHOULD be the one to make up any shortfall. Though she will probably tell Sam to just take out a loan.

(Please note: We would never let her not finish for lack of funds.)

That is terrible... the price of college is crazy, kids need all the help they can get.

Hi, Together We Save! Fortunately, Sam only had 3 classes and she is done. Thank goodness her mom didn't insist on claiming her as a deduction sooner. She would have been really in debt at graduation!

If you already help them out with groceries and HBA that is enough. She's an adult(albeit a young one lol)and she needs to deal with this, not you guys. It's a shame her 'mom' is such a selfish idiot with her own kid but a small loan won't cripple Sam financially(at least it won't for the long term).
But this is just MHO....

I agree that the financial aid office people might be able to come up with something if she goes in and effectively pleads her case. I can give her some acting pointers to add emphasis for her meeting with them....lol

Hi, Sluggy! I totally agree with you, Sam is an adult. She just doesn't always want to be. LOL! Who does. Right?

She will probably take out the loan and not bother asking her mom for help. Our kids tend to not want to inconvenience their mom.

Never fear, Samantha can be quite the actress when necessary! I hope she follows my advice. I really think the school will help as she is so close to done. And she really is a good student. And her current work study boss really likes her.

She will be fine. I just sometimes have to complain about her mom's ridiculous choices.

She sounds like a great person!! I hope your daughter realizes that this is her BM's fault. I think BM stands for Bowel Movement? LOL! I like it.
How could you screw over your kid like that? But you warned them!

Hi, SonyaAnn.

Yes, Sam realizes who fault it is. We were discussing the FAFSA a while back and was surprised it still wasn't done and Sam told me that her mom didn't like to do anything that didn't benefit HER. I was totally shocked that Sam said it. Though she is totally right.
