Goodbye, Comcast!

Our "promo" on cable ended and the bill went up to $68.11/month! For an almost basic package. Ugh! I called Comcast asking for a better rate and was told "we can give you a lower price."

Hubby saw me paying the bill and was shocked at the rate. He said, "We need to cancel." So, I started researching alternatives. We can't do satellite or dish because of the direction our apartment faces.

We already have a Roku for streaming Netflix. Then I read about Hulu Plus for $7.99 a month and we tried the trial. It works for us. We won't get all the channels we had, but after much discussion, Hubby and I decided that for a $60/month savings, we could do without them.

So, we bought a couple of antennas from Big Lots for $17 each. And I ordered an additional Roku for our bedroom for $50. So, we spent $84 to get it all set up.

Hubby unhooked our cable boxes and returned them today. We will save $20 this month and starting next month, we will save $60/month. So our set up cost will be recouped in the 2nd month and we will be saving $$$$!!

We can easily afford the $60/month, but we just don't want to pay that to watch TV.

We are pretty happy with our decision!

I canceled cable about two years ago and went to antenna TV. I recently upgraded antennae, and am so happy I did.

As you, I have Roku and just love it, as well as Hulu Plus.

You didn't mention this, so excuse me if I am being redundant, but I also go to the network web sites and watch shows that I really do enjoy, such as The Voice, NCIS, and so forth.

With the Roku, the antenna, and the internet, I really do not miss cable at all. (Okay, maybe the Food Network once in a while!!!) But it's not worth the money when I can just adjust my viewing a tiny bit and save so much money !

Hope you just love it !!!

I really want to try this out. I did do the Hulu Plus trial, but they didn't offer The Amazing Race! So that did it in for me. When I watched some of the River, it kept freezing, and then I had to go out and go back in again, fast forward to the part (and watching the lovely commercials again). It was only one day that I tried it (gave up after the hassle) But I'd love to try it out....do the trial again and ONLY watch that...or just sign up and pay for it..but do some research first...like what shows we watch and what shows hulu offers.....hmmmmm, I smell project! Hubby won't like it b/c we have a brand new 55 inch flat screen with all the bells and whistles (yea...don't drink too much and offer up to buy a new TV...I did that....I was in our bedroom watching a game of some sorts and I couldn't see the score numbers eyes are bad)...so in my stupor I said, let's get a bigger TV in here....so we wen't for a bigger TV for the bedroom and walked out with a brand new one for the living room AND bedroom (bedroom one was free for buying the big one)....ho hum.

Good for you!
I have no idea how much we pay. Fred handles all of that. But I know that he pinches pennies too so I'm not worried.

Sounds like you found a solution that works for you.

We have Time Warner and our contract states they can raise it just a few dollars a year for the first three, then it will go to "current pricing", which means whatever they want to charge us. We have our internet service with them in a package and it costs us $100 for both. That contract expires in August and we are seriously considering dropping it all and going to just internet, either through Time Warner or through AT&T.

Since Shane came home from working out of town, we are finding that we just don't watch TV much anymore. Most days only about an hour; some days not at all. Just seems silly to keep paying when we aren't really using it.

Of course, Kat wants to watch more, but she doesn't NEED to, so we'll probably just ditch cable. We have (disc only option) and probably won't even sign up for Hulu or get an antenna.

The less the TV is on around here, the better I like it. But that's just me. :)

Good deal for you! We have very basic cable and it's around $29 per month. We also have Netflix which we're going to substitute out for Amazon pretty soon I think. It has better and more choices.

Kris Watson, thanks for stopping by. Yes, we have watched shows on-line in the past when we missed shows. (Before having On Demand with Comcast.)

Judy, I imagine we might miss some shows, but the savings will make it easier to take.

Thanks for coming to see me, Spaghetti. I posted a Hulu Plus referral link if you want to do a 2 week trial.

Mark, I pinch pennies, too, but I like my tv and was okay paying for it. But Hubby convinced me that we could manage without.

Annie, I love tv. I admit it.

McVal, I did a comparison and Netflix has a lot more titles than Amazon right now. Though Amazon might have more of what you want.

We have been cable/satellite free for a while now. Best choice ever! You will notice that if you got to other people's houses and they have the tv on the commercials will really get under your skin.

SonyaAnn, we aren't missing cable yet. I was worried Hubby would miss ESPN, but he just watches it online. He considers it a small sacrifice to save $60 a month.

Just curious, but where do you get your internet. We have a bundle and thats more than your sixty. Id love to stick to streaming, but wonder how cheap I can get high speed internet

So how is it going without cable?

Frances said...

Barb, we have AT&T DSL, not Uverse...just plain old dsl. We are very happy with it. We are paying $19.99/month since AT&T matched an offer we got from Comcast. When the year of that rate is up, I will call to try and get a deal again.

SonyaAnn, so far, so good.
