The joys of apartment living.

I know that "at our age" Hubby and I are supposed to want to own a house. Well, it would be nice to have a yard, as Hubby is an excellent gardener. But, other than that, we just have not felt the need to invest in one.

This week, the advantages were obvious. We have a really nice washer...heavy duty, extra capacity. It WAS really nice and did a great job on our laundry....until this week. Hubby was washing a load and notice water coming OUT FROM UNDER it during the spin cycle. He turned it off and cleaned up all the water and called me at work to tell me about it. Well, I am a little more mechanically inclined than he, so I looked at it when I got home. I took off the front and checked everywhere, but could not find a clogged line. And I am NOT handy enough to tell if the pump went out or whatever. I COULD tell that it desparately needed a new belt, but it looked like changing that was way beyond my abilities.

We thought about calling a repair man, but since I bought the washer in '93 or '94, I decided that it had done its duty and should be allowed to die in peace. LOL!

So we called our apartment office. Our apartments provide washers and dryers in every unit, but since we had our own when we moved here, they pulled theirs out of our unit. Since they have not had to provide us with either (or a refrigerator, since we have our own) for 6 years, they were more than happy to send us a washer.

The maintenance guy actually offered to check ours out before just trashing it, but he couldn't find the problem, so pulled ours out and a little while later brought us a BRAND NEW, in the box washing machine. WooHoo!

If we lived in a house, we would have had to take care of the old washer, go to the store, buy a new one and wait for delivery. Sure, we can afford to buy a new one, but we didn't have to.

Yeah for apartment living!!

Having lived in both houses and apartments, I can whole-heartedly agree that homeownership isn't right for everyone. There are definitely some perks to apartment living, especially for folks who can't or simply choose not to maintain a home of their own.

Good for you on getting the new washing machine. Enjoy it!

My washer died a few months ago. It would have been great to make a call and get a new one. The biggest problem I ever had with apartment living was the neighbor downstairs raising a stink whenever my kids even walked across the floor.

You remind me of myself LOL Years ago, my washer stopped draining the water from the tub. I called a repairman and got a quote of 75 dollars just to come look at it. I took off the front, removed the screw from the clamp on the hose, with a butter knife. LOL I discovered that a sock was in the line between the tub and the pump. I was so proud of myself hehe

Congrats on the new washer!

Yeah for the new washer! We own our home, but it seems if one thing breaks down so does everything in the house. All at the same time! Ugh!

Hi, Annie Jones! We would have no problem maintaining a home. We are both pretty handy. And if our apartments did not provide a washer and dryer in every unit, and if our machine was not as old as it was, I would have been repairing it. I say I don't know how, but I could have figured it out. LOL!

Hubby is enjoying the new machine. I don't have to do laundry. I am lucky that way!

Hi, Dawna! Thanks for stopping by.

We are very fortunate that we have always had pretty good neighbors. the only one that ever complained was one that was upset when Hubby watered all his plants and water fell on her patio. The funny thing was tht the time she got upset, it was pouring rain outside! Her patio was getting wet anyway. LOL!

I can't wait until we can move back into an apartment. I really don't like living in a house. You are genius.

Frances said...

Well, SonyaAnn, the jury is out on whether I am a genius. LOL!

Why would you move out of your house into an apartment? I love living in an apartment, but I don't know that I would go from a house to one, if I already had the house. Is it to downsize when the kids are moved out?

I loved living in an apartment. I lived in a really nice one(at the time, now its a dive) here in Antioch for a few years. I would go back in a second. I loved having someone take care of everything. I had free time and extra money. The house seems to eat up all of that.

Frances said...

Oh, SonyaAnn, I am sorry the house eats up time and money. But at least it is a pretty house!

If you say so! I don't think its all that great. Nothing matches up, everything needs to be redone. UGH! Like I said before you are the smart one!

But you have a yard, so you can plant veggies and get free food. Free food, SonyaAnn!!!

That is certainly one of the biggest perks of not owning! And when one appliance dies, you just know two or three more are going to bite the dust:)

Hi there Frances! I have lived in various apartments, rented houses, and now hubs and I are buying this house. There are advantages to both, but like you say, it is nice to be able to have a garden. I LOVE MY GARDEN!

Apt. living was nice, though. There was a maintenance man there and if something died, I didn't have to be responsible for fixing it!

Hi, Debbie and A.Marie! Thanks for coming to see me!

Technically, we DO have a garden, it is just on our balconies. I have posted pics of Hubby's gardens. LOL! We probably have more plants than a lot of people with houses. But we don't grow much food. Hubby does grow bell peppers and he is quite proud when he gets to pick one. LOL!

I am just waiting for the dryer to break now. I am sure that a new one would be much more energy efficient. Too bad I had to buy such a good one. LOL!

Funny - we are getting a new refrigerator - ours was a wedding gift 21 years ago! I like new but hate spending the money... Congrats on your new appliance.

Merry Christmas!
