#SocialSummer: Good Eats!

I was challenged by Social Insiders to tell you about something delicious I made. That is an EASY one! I made peach cobbler! I made it on Sunday and I am still salivating over it. I have the last little bit in the fridge to eat for lunch today and I cannot wait for lunch!

I want to share the easiest cobbler recipe ever. I have seen other recipes that swear to be the easiest ever, but they all have more ingredients than mine. So, I swear this is the easiest ever. And man, oh man, is it delicious!

My sister gave me this recipe years ago and she hates to cook. A recipe has to be super easy for her to want to make it. (She is a good cook, she just hates doing it. LOL!) I vary this recipe, depending on how much fruit I am using and how doughy I want it. The one above was made using the following:

Peach Cobbler
Ingredients:

  • 3 cups sliced peaches. (you can use fresh, frozen or even canned)
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 stick butter

Put the peaches in a baking dish. Mix flour, sugar and milk until blended and pour over fruit. Dot top with butter. Put in oven preheated to 350 and bake for one hour. (If the dough does not seem done enough, I just put it back in the oven until it is as done as I want.)

I have used less fruit and decrease the amount of batter and I have used less batter for the same amount of fruit. Just whatever I am in the mood for. Just be sure that you use equal parts of flour, sugar and milk.

My sister's recipe called for dotting the butter on the fruit before pouring the batter on, but my hairdresser told me that he just melts it and mixes it into the batter. I have done that before and it worked great, but this time I didn't want to bother with melting butter.

So there is my super easy cobbler recipe and it works for most fruits. But it does not work with commercial pie filling. I tried that once and the batter did not sink under the fruit...just sat on top. It tasted good, but looked odd.

Hope someone makes it and enjoys it! @SocialInsiders #SocialSummer

#SocialSummer - Getting Crafty

I was challenged by Social Insiders to pick a craft project and try it out. I am currently working on an afghan that my mom started, so I guess I already picked me craft. I always try to be ahead of the game.

My mom crocheted all the time. She always had a project going, so we were all kept in afghans, pillows and house slippers. She also taught me how to crochet and I did it in spurts. I made a couple of lap afghans and lots and lots of scarfs.

When I became a grandma for the first time, I picked it up again with a vengeance. I made each one of my grandsons 3 afghans when they were born. Their mamas are not sentimental, so I guarantee those are long gone, but oh well. I also made one for my great niece. She is now 8 and still has hers. Her mama IS sentimental. Since my youngest grandson is now 7, it has been a couple of days since I was crocheting for babies.

Last year, when my mom passed away, we started going through things to determine what to get rid of, what to organize and what to keep to make Dad's home comfortable for him to live in. I mean, it was comfortable, but he didn't need to be surrounded by all Mom's stuff. He is totally not interested in Harlequin Romances. LOL!

We knew she had a TON of yarn. There is an entire craft room full of yarn, fabric and craft supplies. And we have not even gotten all the way through it yet, a year later. But we started finding unfinished crochet projects. Mom was always working on more than one at a time, so we weren't surprised.

Since I enjoy crocheting and my two sisters that were there do not, I was designated to finish Mom's projects. Here are some pics of what I have finished so far. (Oh, and Mom always knew who things were for before she started, but we did not. So as I finish each thing, it goes to the one that it seems to be for.)

Large lap afghan that ended up being for sister, Jackie.

Next I only had to put a border around a little afghan. It went to my 3 year old great niece, Lexi
Then, since there was a lot of the same yarn from the baby afghan and because my niece, Jessica, loved the colors so much, I made her a large lap afghan. This pic was actually before I finished it. It is pretty big. LOL!

Those were the projects I had brought home when after Mom passed away. When I went there on vacation last month, I came back with a dufflebag of unfinished projects.

Not only am I enjoying crocheting, but I am able to give family members something Mom started and I finished. Oh, and I also will have to crochet an afghan for Hubby as he keeps asking me if it is his each time I finish something.

So, there are my crafty projects and carrying on a family legacy.I call that success!

#SocialSummer - One of my favorite things.

As a member of Social Insiders I have been challenged with telling you about my favorite thing.

This was a hard one as I have a lot of favorite things. Followers of my blog, if any are still around since I have not been blogging in a long time, might remember that my Hubby is one of my favorite things. But I think that is not the subject of the challenge. LOL!

So today I will tell you about one of my favorite things that is not my hubby!

Believe it or not, one of my favorite things is our rolling shopping cart. Yes, it really is!
For years, Hubby and I lived in second floor apartments and we lugged thousands of pounds of groceries up those starts. And we hauled camping equipment up and down those stairs for years. Yes, even though Hubby goes camping by himself, I would help him lug his crap.

When we moved to a first floor apartment, carrying groceries would have been easier, but for some reason, I decided I wanted a rolling cart. At the time we moved, apparently I thought we were rich as I was ordering all kinds of new stuff for our apartment, so I ordered a cart. I started using it to bring in groceries and I loved it!! What used to take me 3 trips between the car and apartment I could now make in one! It was awesome!

Of course, Hubby didn't think he needed to use it, until the first time he did. Then he realized how awesome it was! He especially loved that when he was in his wheelchair after surgeries he can move get stuff to and from the car. Regularly, he comments on how he is so glad we got this cart.

I will say it has really saved extra wear and tear on my knees and in the hot summer it is a dream to not have to go in and out of the heat!

So, there is one of my favorite things! We love it so much that when Aldi had one in its ad, Hubby went and got one to keep in the closet for when ours breaks or wears out. Love it!

#SocialSummer: All about my town!

So, I was challenged by Social Insiders to blog about what makes my town special. I talk about living in the Houston area, but I actually live in the city of Pasadena, Texas. On the map, it looks like a suburb of Houston, but it is really its own city. No, really! Pasadena is really a historic city. And here are some interesting facts:

Pasadena is one of the top 20 most populated cities in Texas.

John Travolta, Debra Winger and other actors came to the city to film the 1980 hit movie Urban Cowboy, which depicted life and young love in Pasadena. The film centered on the city's honky-tonk bar Gilley's, which was co-owned by country music star Mickey Gilley. I went to Gilley’s back in the day, but I did not ride the mechanical bull!

Clara Barton of the American Red Cross purchased 1.5 million strawberry plants and sent them to Pasadena to help victims of the 1900 flood get back on their feet. By the 1930s those crops had flourished so much that Pasadena was claiming the title of Strawberry Capital of the World. At its height, the city's strawberry growers shipped as many as 28 train carloads of strawberries each day. To honor that history, the city still holds an annual Pasadena Strawberry Festival. Here is a picture of the World’s Biggest Strawberry Shortcake! Yum!

The Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department is the largest all volunteer municipal fire department in the United States. And it is fabulous! We had to call once when our chimney caught on fire on January 1, 2015. They came fast and put that fire out quick!

The city operates 15 tennis courts, several baseball fields, and a total of 43 parks total. These include over 14 miles of trails, four Youth Recreation Centers, an Adaptive Recreation center, three pools for Swimming or Aquatics, an Athletics department, a Dog Park, Party Rentals, a Golf Course, an Historical Museum, and a Senior Citizen Center.

Armand Bayou Nature Center is a 2,500 acre preserve on the western shore of Galveston Bay in Pasadena. It is the only remnant of this region's original eco-systems: coastal tall grass prairie, bottomland forest and bayou. A diversity of plant life has taken root here, including bottomland hardwoods. Hundreds of species of wildlife thrive in the narrow wooded streams and scattered lakes, ponds and marshes.Armand Bayou also is a breeding and nursery ground for many fin fish and shellfish and a haven for rarely seen species such as bobcats and owls.

Pasadena also has an annual Rodeo, Thanksgiving Day parade, Christmas Parade and various town celebrations throughout the year. Go Pasadena, Texas!

BUT it is only available at HEB and I have not had a chance to go by my HEB. I really love HEB, but it is the most crowded grocery store in our area. I love to go when I have a day off from work during the week when it is less crowded and I have not had a day off lately. I will on Monday and I will be heading to HEB!

Readers of my blog know that I am a big Purex fan. This is actually our regular brand of detergent even when I don't have coupons for it! It is such a great value and does a great job on our laundry. So, I know I will love Purex® Fresh Bluebonnet just as much, if not more. After all, the Bluebonnet IS Texas’ state flower!

Purex® plus Clorox 2® Review and Giveaway! Ends 4/17/16

Purex introduces its best clean available. Purex plus Clorox 2 combines the bright clean of Purex detergent with an extra powerful boost of Clorox 2 stain fighters. Purex plus Clorox 2 detergent works on 100 stains, is safe for colors, and bleach free. It comes in two fragrances: Original Fresh and Sunny Linen.

Purex plus Clorox 2 detergent contains 2 stain-fighting enzymes to remove 100 stains:

  • Removes starchy stains like chocolate and tomato sauce
  • Removes protein-based stains like grass and blood.
  • Removes food stains that use guar gum like ice cream and BBQ sauce

As a member of Social Insiders, I received a free bottle of Purex plus Clorox 2 to try out and as with all Purex products, I was very happy to try it out. Unfortunately, or is is fortunate?, I haven't had any stains to fight with it, just boring old laundry. Too bad I couldn't use it on the carpet stains I had to clean this week!

Here is a picture of Purex plus Clorox 2  with the afghan I am crocheting! I do find that it will be cost effective for us, as we use Clorox 2 in almost every load of laundry we do just in case we don't see a stain. It keeps our whites and colors bright. So having it combined with Purex detergent is a big plus and a great value for us!

Readers of my blog know that I am a big Purex fan. This is actually our regular brand of detergent even when I don't have coupons for it! It is such a great value and does a great job on our laundry.

Just a quick update.

Multiple tests and several doctors have determined that my mom's cancer is too far along and too widespread to be treated for other than pain management. The doctors were honest with our family and my dad and sisters decided not to submit my mom to difficult and grueling treatment that might only prolong her life for a few months. They would rather she be comfortable and I agree.

Mom will be sent home from the hospital with/for hospice care for pain management. Hubby and I are leaving tomorrow to go be with her.

Please continue to pray for our family in this difficult time.

It is hard to blog when your heart is breaking.

My mom has cancer.

Please pray for our family.

Check out the New Dial Rewards website!

Visit www.dialrewards.com; to sign up and join in on the fun!

As a Purex Insider I was invited to preview the new Dial Rewards program. Rewards?! You bet your booty I signed up.

Both of the above are referral links and I can get more points if you use one of them. Or, you can just enter the web address yourself. My feelings won't be hurt...well, because I won't know. LOL!

You can do different activities to earn points.

"Choose an activity to start earning points. Once you’ve completed an activity, we’ll deposit* points into your account. Remember, the more points you have, the more you can spend on chances to win"

I earned 50 points just for signing in and 500 points for entering my unique code. You can use my code to get 500 points too! A few activities like watching short videos and answering surveys and I am up to 5050 points! And I have only been playing around for a little while.

Use this unique code: J4219 in the section to enter a code for 500 points. Since I am a Purex Insider, the number of people using my unique code will be tracked and I could win prizes! WooHoo! I love prizes!

And play games once you earn points.

"Each game of chance requires a certain amount of points to play. You can play the games until you reach your daily game play limit or run out of points. Remember, if you're short on points, you can earn more by completing activities."

I will probably use all my points to try to win Amazon gift cards as those are my favorite! So, go sign up...have some fun...earn some points! And let me know if you win any prizes!

I think I am becoming intolerant.

I try not to be, but it is so darn hard!

It seems like, lately, that more and more things really bug me and make me feel like lots of people are just idiots and I don’t know how they manage to take care of themselves or anything else.  (Oh, and I am really in a good mood today, so this feeling is not just because I am cranky.)

I ride the bus into work every day. It is a nice pleasant ride and I spend the 20 minutes or so reading. It starts for a very relaxing day…except when another rider feels that I MUST be party to their phone conversations. Usually, I just shake my head. If they are really annoying, I plug in earbuds to block them out. The other morning a “girl” behind me…early to mid-twenties…was talking on her phone. I was not eavesdropping as she clearly did not mind everyone hearing her conversation. But she did make the best comment ever:
“I was worn out yesterday from texting all day.”

It was all I could do not to burst out in hysterical laughter. All I could think was what would this woman do if she had to do any real work. It made me sad for whatever company has hired her or hires her in the future.

Then I got to work and looked around and it is astounding how many people are surfing the internet and/or playing on their personal phones when I walk down the hall to my desk. Admittedly, it is 8 am, BUT many of these people “start” work at 7:30. So how is it fair to the company that they are not actually working?

It is not really my concern, BUT a few months ago, I was “spoken to” about being on the internet. Ummmmmm…I was at lunch…made clear by the fact that it was lunchtime and I had food in front of me. Other members of my team regularly eat at their desks and surf the net, but because “someone” said something and my boss is so concerned with appearances, I had to be spoken to. So, now, I leave my desk and go eat lunch somewhere else. And I am unavailable to my boss for that hour every day. His loss.

Of course, I can look at most other team members at any time during the day and they are on the internet. Sure, they could be researching, but I don’t think any of our jobs have anything to research on Facebook, Yahoo’s entertainment page or on Youtube. Of course, that is just my opinion.

I think maybe my boss says something to me as he knows it will bother me that he might think I was not working when I was supposed to be. Other members don’t care. LOL! Also, his loss.

I was worried that maybe I am just jealous that others get away with what I don’t, but I am worried about the state of my company. If all of these people are surfing, who is doing the work? We find out when we hear of some crisis where something did not get done correctly and everyone needs to drop what they are doing and help get the issue corrected. I just shake my head that any business is run this way.

I also get irritated by people who cannot walk across the street without looking at their phones. Come on people you need to look at the traffic lights…not your phone. If it is so urgent, stop walking. I can’t even count how many people I have told to “stop” because they were so intent on their phones that they didn’t see the train coming. The freaking TRAIN! How can you cross train tracks and not make sure there is no train coming first? But we hear almost weekly about someone getting hit by the train in downtown Houston. I am sure those people thought they had no fault in it. But I can assure you, the train is not invisible and it is not silent.

Oh, yeah, and Hubby and I went to the movie on Sunday. We sat in our preferred spot away from all others in the theater…there were only two other couples there when we sat down. And the very NEXT family of five that walked in sat RIGHT BEHIND US. We are so freaking magnetic!

I guess I could go on all day about things that people do that are so idiotic that it annoys me to no end. Or, I could just try not to think about them. Maybe I will try that for a while. Just be oblivious like everyone else. LOL!

Oh, and I took a break to write and post this. LOL! Why not, everyone else does.

Our animal magnetism lives!

We went to see Jurassic World in 3D and it was GREAT! LOVED it! Hubby and I got there really early, since the last time we tried to go to a movie the lines were so long at the box office that we left and went to another theater. Anyway, we went into the theater and were the only people there, so picked our seats and got comfy. We like to sit on the first row of the risers as Bobby likes to prop his feet up on the railing.

We kicked back and after a bit, another guy walked in and sat down ONE SEAT OVER FROM ME. I am glad I had my purse and umbrella in the seat next to me as he might have sat there. LOL! THEN, since the trailers hadn’t started, he gets on the phone and starts talking. OMG! Clearly he had no reason to worry about disturbing US. Ugh! At least he put his phone away when the movie started.

Before the movie started, I put my purse down by my feet. No need to sit and worry about it for the whole movie.

The next couple of people that came in sat RIGHT BEHIND US. It was just hilarious! We say it is because of our animal magnetism. And during the movie someone got on their phone and started talking. At least that person got up and left the theater, of course talking the whole way. I always wonder why people even go to the movies if they cannot turn their phone off for an hour and a half. I don’t think they are all brain surgeons.

Oh, and while I am on the subject of inappropriate cellphone use, when are people going to realize that while you are driving is not a good time to be checking your phone for messages. If you are waiting for a message that important, pull the hell over and get away from me.

Rant over.

Happy Monday everyone!

Thank goodness for the dollar store!

It has been 2 months since my second cataract surgery and I am still adjusting to not having to wear glasses all the time. I have not gone and gotten prescription glasses as I am doing great with reading glasses. I now can function perfectly fine with 1.75 or 2.0 readers. And I can buy them at the dollar stores....for A DOLLAR.

Why would I go get prescription glasses that I will have to pay more for? I have vision coverage, but my copy for glasses is $25. That is with no bells and whistles. No coatings. No progressives. Just plain single vision lenses. Why would I pay even $25 for one pair when for the same money I can buy 25 pair???

So, I have readers everywhere; in my purse, in my desk drawer, in the bathroom, on the computer desk at home, on my nightstand. And a couple of "just in case" pair, one in my purse and one in my tote bag I carry to work. Those are just in case I don't have a pair handy when I need one. I love it.

The only problem is that I take them off and put them on all day long and sometimes this happens:

I tucked a pair in the neckline of my blouse and when I bent over, they fell out. And I step on them. Ugh! Good thing I had another in my purse. But this was a really cute pair of tortoiseshell that I liked. So I guess I will have to suck it up and head to the dollar store and part with another dollar. :-)

Otherwise, I am loving my new, improved vision and have no complaints at all.

Happy Tuesday, all!

You don't have 3 days worth of food?

A friend of mine posted this pic of her local grocery store water aisle.
A tropical storm is in the Gulf of Mexico and headed toward the Texas coast. So everyone has gone crazy! Broadcasters are warning people to be sure and have at least 3 days worth of food and water. Apparently, the stores have been mobbed today.

Shelves emptied of water, batteries and food.

My first thought was that if you don't have enough food in your house to last for 3 days, you have a bigger problem than a tropical storm. Even when I was POOR I had enough food in my house to last 3 days. I had to.....I was poor. LOL!

And another thing a broadcaster warned people was to be sure and go to the ATM today in case you are flooded in tomorrow. If you are flooded in, why would you need cash???? I don't have to pay for anything inside my home. Crazy, I tell ya!

Personally, I am hoping to be flooded in so I can have tomorrow off. Our area does not really flood. When we had the "Memorial Day Flooding" we got rain but no standing water whatsoever. BUT, when it floods in Houston, the buses don't run. I take a park and ride bus every day to work. If the bus doesn't run, I am not going to work. I did last time as my girlfriend drove downtown, but she does not plan to go in tomorrow if it floods in Houston.

We are always prepared at our house. It is hurricane season. We live on the coast. Plus we always have enough food for 3 days. So, we are good.

It seems like Renuzit® Pearl Scents® has a strong scent while I hold it....and have my nose in it, but it really is subtle. I have found myself picking it up and giving it a shake when I pass by which seems to strengthen the scent. I think the container is nice and would work in any room.

There are several colors and scents, so you could work them with any color scheme. I think the pearls would be really pretty in clear glass dishes. Here it is in my bathroom:

We found the perfect anniversary gift.

Yesterday was my parents' 59th wedding anniversary. Last week I had emailed my sister asking what I could get for them. I wanted to send them something, but wanted it to be something they would want/love, not just something to have sitting around gathering dust.

So, my sister texted me that she and my other sister and she were thinking about getting them a new rocker recliner as Mom had been thinking about getting one, but didn't want to spend the money. I thought it was a great idea and told Sis I was in...just let me know my part. She texted me yesterday that they had order the chair and it would be delivered today. It cost $300 and we are splitting 3 ways. A very reasonable price for a really good anniversary gift. I told Sis to send me a pic when it got there.

Here is a pic of my dad in the new rocker recliner:
Yes, it is CAMO! Sis said that my mom picked it out. It is perfect for them. After all, they DO live in a forest. Here is a clearer look at the chair:
What is funny is that when Hubby and I were shopping for a rocker recliner, we tried one out just like this one. It was SO COMFY, but neither of us wanted camo in our living room. LOL!

So my sisters and I have once again proven our love for our parents. LOL!
